Basic information

Within the department of Family Medicine the Specialty Training provides extensive post-graduate training to trainees. The Family Medicine Specialty Training programme typically lasts 3 years. The first and third year are spent working in general practice surgeries in the Southern part of the Netherlands (the wider Maastricht and Eindhoven regions). Year two consists of 6 months working in Accident and Emergency departments of local hospitals, 3 months psychiatry and 3 months chronic care, mostly in nursing homes. There is a nationally approved competency profile for Family Doctors. It describes and prescribes what to learn and teach during Family Medicine Specialty Training.
Trainees are required to fullfill criteria within the list of the Family Doctors' competences: medical expertise, doctor-patient communication, collaboration, management, science and education, social accountability, professionalism.
